Plus, their tummies may better handle going from the taste of formula or breastmilk to a bland rice better than flavorful fruit or vegetable.

Homemade Rice Cereal

You will need …

  • ¼ cup rice powder

  • 1 cup water

  • ½ cup milk (formula or expressed breast milk)

  • 1 tsp sugar.

How to make Homemade Rice Cereal

  1. Bring the water to boil in a sauce pan.

  2. Add rice powder while stirring constantly.

  3. Simmer for at least 5-7 minutes while whisking constantly. Add 1 tsp sugar.

  4. Add milk slowly and let simmer for 5 minutes on slow flame. Serve warm.

Homemade Rice Cereal Tips:

  1. You can add fruit purees (apples or banana or papaya) to make it more tasty and wholesome.
  2. To obtain rice powder, grind rice grains in a blender or food processor. Shif through a fine strainer.
  3. You can vary  this recipe slightly to make rice kanji which is especially invaluable in episodes of upset tummies (diarrohea). For this, boil 1 cup water and add 30 grams (or 2 tbsp) of rice powder to make the solution into a thin liquid. Add one teaspoon of salt and water to this liquid to make it up to 1 litre. Feed as per requirement from time to time.
